Project summary
Tourism films embody the tourism strategy of tourism destinations, and the analysis on them allows us to decipher what kind of tourism phenomenon exists and how the tourism strategies are used to counteract it. However, even in international studies, research related to "tourism" and "images" is limited to film tourism and film induced tourism, and remains limited to the analysis of tourism phenomena, such as how tourist attractions are focused on by films and TV programs. In this study, we aim to analyze tourism films from a practical point of view, and to achieve research results that can be applied to society.
Activity and results reports
One of the most notable achievements of this research was the invitation of the principal investigator as an expert to Branded Shorts, organized by Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, a pioneering film festival in Japan, in June 2024. This opportunity served as a catalyst for wider recognition as a specialist in tourism film within Japan. This appearance subsequently led to an invitation for a television interview on a major Tokyo-based network, which was recorded in February 2025 and is scheduled to be broadcast in April of the same year. In March 2025, the 7th Japan International Tourism Film Festival was held in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture, where multiple symposiums were organized focusing on tourism film and sustainable tourism. Furthermore, from an academic perspective, a peer-reviewed abstract titled “The Diverse Roles of Tourism Film” was presented at SEAMA 2025, held at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
